Centre plans sustained highway development ... 12/5/06
$ 50 billion is the figure. For highways. Through Public Partnership Model. This
will involve huge private sector financing, massive growth and expansion in
contracting and consultancy sector, skilled manpower, upgrading of equipments
and importantly - establishing dispute resolution mechanism. Upto Phase III has
already been approved by NHAI (National Highway Development Authority of India).
Phases IV to VI are under consideration. Phase IV is about two-laning with
shoulders of some 20,000 Km of national highways.
Phase V is about six laning some 6,500 Kms of Highways, primarily in the Golden
Quadrilateral and few high density corridors.
Phase VI is about building 1,000 Kms of Expressways.
Corridors under consideration are Vadodara-Mumbai, Delhi-Agra, Delhi-Jaipur,
Delhi-Chandigarh, Chennai-Bangalore and Dhambad-Kolkata.
Phase-VII is about projects such as ring roads, bypasses and elevated highways -
essentially urban infrastructure.
All this would lead to overall GDP growth with the manufacturing sector
benefiting the most.
